Wine Storage Racks
If you are looking for a wine storage rack, as opposed to just a wine rack, it is likely that you want to be able to keep more than just a few bottles at a time. In fact, for wine storage, you may be looking to outfit a wine cellar, in which case your needs are very different from someone who just wants to keep a few bottles of wine in the kitchen. Here is what you need for long-term wine storage.
For wine storage, you will probably want to be able to keep your wines in good condition for more than two weeks to a month. This means that, ideally, you will have the wine in a place that is out of sunlight and away from vibrations. The vibrations are particularly important to consider while you are buying a wine storage rack -- you want something ery solid that will not wobble even the faintest bit while you take a bottle off of it.
For good wine storage, the location you choose should also be around 55 degrees and have a humidity of about 70%, but also have reasonably good air circulation. To get good air circulation, the bottles need to have at least an inch or two, and preferably 2-4 inches between them as they sit on the rack.
You may want to skip the wine storage racks that do not have the bottle sitting completely flat on its side. While these are good for wine merchants who want people to be able to read the labels of the wine easily, they are not good for the cork seal on the bottle. It is important, during storage, that the wine be in contact with the cork seal so the cor does not shrink, or get mold, or even crack. Also, because that cork is in direct contact with your wine, the room you store your wine in should be free of any odd odors. That means that using your wine cellar as a root cellar to keep onions in might not be such a good idea.
Wooden Wine Storage Racks
With that much humidity, you will want a kind of wood that is resistant to mold, which is another threat to stored wine. So look for woods like cedar (redwood cedar) and oak or other hardwoods. Mahogany is a particularly nice choice, but it is not cheap.
Metal Wine Racks
Metal is acceptable for storing wine, as are glass wine storage racks. I find them a bit less "friendly" than wood, somehow, and I am always concerned about the hard surfaces somehow managing to be hard enough to have a bottle break when they come in contact with each other. There are some reasonably nice metal, or more wire wine storage racks that will lend a more modern feel, if that's what you are after.
There are also quite a few metal wrought iron work wine options that function more like wine storage cabinets. If you want a "shabby chic" look, these would be a good choice. Actually, aside from wood, the wrought iron metal wine storage cabinets fit in with a country or rustic decor better than any other option. They look like they would be at home in a little Italian restaurant outside of Florence.
