Wood Wine Rack
Some things to consider as you shop for your wooden wine rack, including the type of wood, shipping costs, assembly, and wood finishes.
If you are just looking for a straight-forward wooden wine rack, check out Target, Amazon and Walmart. In the case of Walmart and Target, call ahead because Target may have only one or two of the wine racks that are on their website in stock. Walmart ususally has 2-3 of the racks from their website in stock. However, Target online has free shipping, and so does Amazon. To get Amazon's free shipping you have to be a part of their awesome "Amazon Prime" club (if you buy any more than five things a year from Amazon, or you are extremely time-stressed and doing errands is becoming difficult, I really, really recommend checking the Prime program out. I save 2-3 hours a month letting Amazon to some of my errands, and so I get to spend 2-3 more hours a month watching my garden and drinking nice wines. Its a good deal).
The dowel and peg style wooden wine racks have a kitchen utility kitchen feel, but I saw one collapse once and I haven't trusted them since. Still, Amazon's best-selling wooden wine rack is the J.K. Adams MWR-40 Hardwood 40-Bottle Wine Rack, Natural . It gets great reviews. It just scares me.
You also definitely want a rack that has the wine lying flat -- it is important that the wine stay in contact with the cork so the cork does not dry out and so that the wine can breathe through the cork. Incidentally, the cork can absorb odors. If you have some collector quality wines I would be very careful about putting them near a new-smelling wooden wine rack, especially if it had sealer on the wood or if it had doors that would be sealing them wine into an odd-smelling space. Circulation is really important, and smell is one of the best reasons why.
This may be blasphemy to some people, but I always look over a wine rack for double uses. Namely, mail. There are three adults in my household and we all get a reasonable amount of mail. The wine rack has ended up being the best mail sorter.
Wine racks are also great for magazine storage (in offices, livingrooms or bathrooms) and they can work for special oils if you have that many. It is not uncommon for the sort of person who has a nice wine rack to also have 2-3 kinds of olive oil, walnut oil, canola oil, champagne vinagrette... the list goes on. You want to keep those oils out of the sun, just like your wine -- so plan to put whatever wine rack you get out of the sun.
Stackable wine racks are nice. The Vinotemp VT-DIAMONDBIN Wood Wine Rack Cube, 24-Bottle has a dark finish. If you like lighter and unfinished wood, go for the Modular Wine Rack - 24 Bottle - Pine Wood (Pine) (20 . Home Depot also has a very similar dark-stained wine rack, and theirs is actually in stock.
